Mr. Estes James Lockhart, 65, of Frederick, Md., died Sunday, June 19, 2005 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Sally Marvin Lockhart.
Born February 19, 1940 in Jackson, Miss., he was the son of the late Estes James Sr. and Alfreda Jefferies Lockhart.
Dr. Lockhart was a mental health therapist and consultant in private practice whose significant achievements include developing and implementing highly successful pupil services programs for troubled students, where mental health services are linked to educational services. In 1977 he founded an alternative public school for adolescents with troubling behaviors, including violent behavior, that has been replicated in other states (The Heather Ridge School). Dr. Lockhart’s national presentations, consultations and publications are broadly based, addressing the mental health needs of children, adolescents and their families and the counselor’s role in addressing disabled populations.
He retired from the Maryland State School system after thirty years as a counselor, teacher, school psychologist, principal, and Director of Student Services. Dr. Lockhart continued in private practice as a clinical mental health therapist with Harper Associated in Frederick, Md. He also continued to teach couple and family therapy at the Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Lockhart served his country from 1959-1966 in the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. From 1969-1970 he served in the U.S. Peace Corps as an English lecturer, Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. From 1970 until 1986, he was involved with the Frederick County school system in several areas. From 1986-1998 he was Supervisor of School Counseling and Psychological Services in Frederick County public schools and from 1998 until 2000 he was Director of Student Services in the Howard County, Md. public schools.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Estes Sage Lockhart of Roanoke, Va. and Innes Lockhart of San Francisco, Calif.
There will be a memorial service at a later date.
