Mary was born December 29, 1912 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio.  She never married.  She passed away in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio where she lived for most of her life.  Prior to her Peace Corps service, she had spent some time teaching on a Navaho Reservation in New Mexico.  Mary taught English at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey.  She returned to the US before her term was complete because of medical issues.  Mary had a sharp wit and a wonderful, dry sense of humor.

Although I never saw her after I returned from Turkey, we did exchange a couple of letters.  I have never forgotten her friendship.   — Judith Havens Altug
